Well, last week's North Country Now reader poll offered some pretty strong support for my recent criticism of the foolishly loud motorcycles. Guess I'm not the only one sick of the annual, juvenile display of some people's version of freedom. To those people, remember this: Your rights end where my hearing begins.

A poll of North Country Now readers probably means something to somebody. I respect your feelings and I would never be "that guy". My bike is not real loud and I feel no need to impress anyone by blipping my throttle in the middle of the night. But do we really need another law, or another reason to pull bikers over? Don't we have enough of that already?
ReplyDeleteThe laws already exist, Bruce, all we have to do is enforce them. Sound levels above 100 decibels are dangerous and can damage hearing. The bikes I'm talking about easily exceed that level when they're flying by or their noise junky owners are revvying them when they take off at a stop light.
ReplyDeleteWhy single out motorcycles? Plenty of cars and trucks exceed the decibel level too. The most effective deterrent to this stupidity is peer pressure. When they figure out that nobody is impressed by their antics, they learn to modify their behavior. Nobody wants to ride with them and the girls won't talk to them. Bikers already deal with too many rules. They have to wear a helmet, even if the wearing of said helmet ndoes not protect other motorists one bit. Then you are supposed to have reflective tape on said helmet, and it must be x number of square inches. You have to take a specific road test to qualify for a motorcycle license. You don't need a special license to drive a pickup truck, operate a cabin cruiser, or to pull a 26' travel trailer. Isn't it time we have something other than a big government solution to some of these issues?
ReplyDeleteNow we are junky owners. I love to read how stupid some of you people are. We depend on truck drivers to transport things so anything off 100 decibels would put them off the road. Bikes are like trains people they go by you and then they are gone. How loud do you think a train horn is. Get life people and worry about other things that are more important.
